Establishment and development history of Saigon Co.op
Saigon Co.op is established in 1989. After the 6th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the national economy shifts from subsidiary mechanism into market economy with socialist orientation. Thus, the former economic cooperative model encounters into difficulties and faces serious crisis, leading to mass dissolution. In that context, on 12 May 1989 – Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee advocated the shifts from the Management Board of the City Sale Cooperatives into the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Trading Cooperatives -Saigon Co.op with two functions: direct business and the advocacy of Cooperative movement. Saigon-Co.op is an economic Cooperatives operating according to the collective ownership, production and self-controlled business activities and self-responsibility.
Seizing opportunity for development
From 1992 to 1997, along with the development of the national economy, foreign investment capital in Vietnam forces Businesses to be dynamic and creative to seize business opportunities and learn experiences regarding the management from foreign entities. Saigon Co.op has started the cooperation with foreign partners to raise additional resources for its development. As one of few organizations with direct import and export license issued by the City, the import-export activities of the Unit have brought about high performance and shown its strong position in domestic and foreign markets.
The first Co.opmart Cong Quynh established on 09 February 1996 with the assistance of Cooperative movement of Japan, Singapore and Sweden was the most important event. Then, new retail business model in accordance with the development trend of Ho Chi Minh City mark new development and brightening path of Saigon Co.op
Affirmation and development
The stage from 1998 to 2003 marked a new milestone for development path of Saigon Co.op. Law on co-operative was promulgated in January, 1997 and Saigon Co.op is typical mode of co-operative as dynamical evidence about necessity and effectiveness of co-operative economy, contributing to create new advantage for development of co-operative activity in the whole country.
Realizing importance of retail activity as its actual functions, leader of Saigon Co.op has spent much time on researching and learning experience of KF supermarket system (Sweden), NTUC Fair Price (Singapore), Co.op (Japan) in order to create a supermarket system bearing characteristics of co-operative model in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam. In 1998, Saigon Co.op reorganized about organization and personnel, concentrating all its resources on investing strongly in retails activity. Co.opmart supermarkets alternately have been established and marked an important development stage: forming a supermarket series with trademark of Co.opmart.

Co.opmart has become a familiar trademark of population in the city and customers in whole country. This is a reliable shoppoing place for customer. The concept of Co.opmart series was started being built for strategy: build Co.opmart to become the leading supermarket series in Vietnam. Success of Co.opmart series helped Saigon Co.op receive the noble reward: "Labour hero in Innovation period" awarded by President of Socialist Republic of Vietnam in August, 2000.
